Seven Days in the Karoo: An Unforgettable Gravel Burn Adventure
Embarking on the inaugural Nedbank Gravel Burn was a thrilling challenge, and I was eager to share my experience. When Cape Epic founder Kevin Vermaak suggested I join, I was initially hesitant. After all, my past attempts at the Cape Epic had been less than successful, and the idea of another grueling South African race seemed daunting. But Vermaak's invitation was for something unique: a seven-day, 800-km adventure in the Eastern Cape's Great Karoo, a region known for its endless gravel roads.
After some thought, I decided to take the plunge. I gathered my trusted companions, Allan 'Alby' Iacuone and Mark O'Hare, and we set out on this extraordinary journey. Despite my doubts, I wondered if my body could handle the rigors of the race after a two-year hiatus from competitive cycling. Could I endure the physical and mental challenges ahead?
Back to the Grind
I dove headfirst into training, seeking guidance from coach Neal Henderson and immersing myself in Ronan's Performance Process podcasts. I explored every nook and crannel of performance, from tire pressure to nutrition, aerodynamics, and warm-ups. The goal was clear: reach the start line, having prepared as thoroughly as possible. Everything after that was out of my control.
Knysna: The Starting Point
Two days before the race, we arrived in Knysna, our preparation complete. The first stage of the Gravel Burn was a baptism by fire.
The rain poured relentlessly, making the opening stage a true test of endurance. We were drenched as we left the neutral zone, and the gravel roads quickly covered us in dirt and grit. The pace was relentless, with riders pushing their limits. I found myself riding with old friends and new acquaintances, all fueled by the same passion for the sport.
On the final climb, I paused to take in the breathtaking views, a moment of clarity amidst the mud and grit. I recalled Ferris Bueller's famous line, reminding myself to appreciate the journey. Back at camp, I was covered in sand and mud, but the experience was unforgettable.
The mechanics and bike washers worked tirelessly, ensuring our bikes were in top shape. Despite the challenges, the Gravel Burn offered an unparalleled adventure, blending the thrill of racing with the beauty of the Karoo's landscapes. It was a reminder that sometimes, pushing through the pain is worth it.
