A New Payment Scam Unveiled: Razorpay's Response and the Fight Against Fraud
A recent viral video has exposed a parking scam in New Delhi, India, where a parking attendant used a Razorpay point-of-sale (POS) device to accept payment, but the device screen displayed a QR code linked to an individual, not the authorized parking system. The alert driver quickly identified the scam and recorded the incident, sparking a debate on the security measures of payment devices.
The video, captioned 'New scam unlocked,' has gained nearly three million views, prompting Razorpay co-founder Shashank Kumar to address the issue. In a public statement, Kumar announced that the next software update will disable gallery access on POS devices unless absolutely necessary for the seller.
While some social media users praised Kumar's transparency, others raised concerns about potential loopholes. One user suggested that a POS machine should not require gallery access and proposed a two-step QR code generation process to enhance security. Another user pointed out the prevalence of scams, sharing an example where a cab driver was targeted with a post-ride QR code for a significantly higher amount.
The discussion also sparked a comparison with Paytm Soundbox, a product by Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, which he claimed can prevent such offline scams. The incident highlights the ongoing battle against payment fraud and the need for continuous innovation in security measures to protect users and businesses alike.
