The Kansas State Wildcats women's basketball team is facing a challenging season ahead, with an incredibly young roster that is still finding its footing. "My patience is being tested in terms of effort and communication," Mittie said. "The rest will fall into place, but these are non-negotiables. We'll work on our chemistry and as a staff, we'll get to know each other better. It's my responsibility to figure this out as quickly as possible."
The team's uncertainty is evident in their ranking, as they were placed seventh in the Big 12 Women's Basketball Preseason Coaches' Poll, with no one on the preseason team. Despite this, there is hope for the future, as the team has some exciting prospects.
Taryn Sides is expected to be a key playmaker, ranking fourth in the school's history in 3-point percentage. "We're really inconsistent now, which is to be expected," Mittie said. "I'm still trying to figure out lineups and who plays well together. The goal is to see how much better this team can be from October to March. I believe the growth rate of this team could be significant."
Despite the challenges, Mittie remains optimistic, citing moments of excitement during the preseason. However, he is also realistic about the process, understanding that it will take time for the team to come together and achieve success.
"I come in here all the time and they're in the gym, so it matters to them," Mittie said. "Right now, they're a little paralyzed by their overthinking, and I've got to simplify things and be patient with them as they grow."
The team's journey will be a test of patience for both the players and the coaching staff, but with a talented group of young athletes, there is potential for a bright future.
